The Happy English Programme Embarked

content_img_03

A Happy Mid-Autumn Festive English Day

In order to broaden students’ horizon, extend their exposure to the world and provide them with an opportunity to communicate with foreigners (the international overseas exchange students of the Chinese University of Hong Kong), the first joint-school activity, Mid-Autumn Festival, of the Happy English Project, organized by the HK Rural School Council and CUHK was held on Friday, 28th September 2012. There were eight schools and about 140 participants joining the activity in which two fabulous programmes were lined up from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. -- a sightseeing guided tour at Kowloon Walled City Park, and games and activities held at Kowloon Tong Bishop Walsh School, the host school.

In the heritage tour of the Kowloon Walled City, students were interested to see the history of the Kowloon Assistant Military Inspectorate, commonly known as 'Yamen' and how the British took over it in 1899 after the Opium War and, as a result, laid the seeds for the eventual deterioration of the area into a semi-lawless enclave and festering squatter slum for drug divans, criminal hide-outs, vice dens and even cheap, unlicensed dentists. Finally in 1987, with the agreement of the Chinese authorities, the area was cleared and a park on the site incorporated with many remaining features of the original buildings and other features was built.

After an hour of long walk in the Walled City Park, we headed to Kowloon Tong Bishop Walsh School nearby. “It is huge!” one of our students exclaimed while seeing the newly-built school. First, Mr Ho from the host school introduced the exchange students in the Chinese University and the participating schools to us. Then we started the exciting game and activities including Kung Fu Performance, Lion Dance, Riddles, Lucky Draw, bingo, playing with lanterns and photo taking. In the Bingo game, three of our students won the prize.

At about 7:00 p.m., we were starving. But can you imagine, we ate the moon cakes, drumsticks with rice just below the bright full moon on the roof top open playground. “Wow, look, look, the moon is up above our heads!” the kids shouted. The kids definitely had a fun time against the beautiful skyline at that moment as it was really subtle and romantic.

So, guys, don’t miss our Happy English activities in the near future.

2011-2012

The students at CMS actively participate in a wide-range of extra-curricular activities during school time and after school.  To name a few, we have English Drama, English Folk Songs, English Fun Fun Fun, Choral Speaking, SCRABBLE Competition, Fashion Show, Spelling Bee Contest, Cooking, English Ambassadors, and more.
The primary goal of the English Department at CMS is to have each child become an independent learner. We want students to excel both academically and personally and to show concern as global citizens and respect for the school community and the community in which they live.

2010-2011
CONGRATULATIONS!
The New EDB Primary Literacy Program - Reading and Writing will launch in year 2010-2011 for all Primary 1 students at CMS!
It is essential that in the primary English classroom, we can provide our students with the four language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) through a sustainable Primary Literacy Program.
THE PLP-R/W Program:
  • caters for learner diversity
  • provides children with focused support through small group teaching
  • tracks and profiles children’s progress
  • begins in Key Stage 1 (all P.1 classes)
  • 50% of English teaching time is devoted to PLP-R/W
  • provides a print-rich environment (English Room and classroom) enhances student learning
  • works in a parent-child-teacher perspective - a detailed briefing for parents will be held in early September 2010.
From reading to writing QEF article
The English team has successfully got granted the Quality Education Fund (From Reading to Writing Program) one year project for P.4-6 students.
The performance indicators are:
1. Pupils are able to comprehend most reading passages and produce better composition.
2. Pupils show interest in the class and have satisfactory participation in the online learning.
3. The online reading/writing platform is in place.
4. Students with different learning progress are given appropriate
level of lessons for learning.

5. Teachers are able to make use of interactive materials to assist their teaching.

In this project, we will shortlist passages that are interesting and level suitable to students. There will be ten reading passages per level (totally 3 levels). We will do the voice-over so that students can listen to the recording while reading. It can increase overall language proficiency, particularly listening comprehension, as well as the ability to acquire a greater sense of the rhythm of the language, which in turn can help learners read and listen in meaningful sense instead of breaking sentences into small parts. Sight words and vocabularies as well as the sentence structure will be introduced.
