A Wonderful Afternoon Visit to the Helena May - 19th September, 2012

On 19th September, 2012, the P. 5 and P. 6 students of our school participated a heritage trip in the Helena May which is located at 35 Garden Road, Central. It was built in 1916.

Many thanks to the hospitality of Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Black, Mr. Cheung and the staff of the Helena May. First of all, they gave us a guided tour around the house and showed us the internal and external environment of this declared monument. After this trip, our students enjoyed the English afternoon tea in the Helena May. Finally, our students completed a worksheet about the history of Helena May. We also had a fun tongue twister activity.

During the activity, students learned not only the language, but also the heritage of the Helena May. Students could understand more about the history of Hong Kong as it was once a colony of Great Britain. They could have an opportunity to see and appreciate the architectural style and structure of this old building and the interior design built a hundred years ago. They could also learn the English table manners and etiquette.

Students enjoyed their visit very much! So did the teacher escorts!

CONGRATULATIONS!
The New EDB Primary Literacy Program - Reading and Writing will launch in year 2010-2011 for all Primary 1 students at CMS!

It is essential that in the primary English classroom, we can provide our students with the four language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) through a sustainable Primary Literacy Program.
THE PLP-R/W Program:

  • caters for learner diversity
  • provides children with focused support through small group teaching
  • tracks and profiles children’s progress
  • begins in Key Stage 1 (all P.1 classes)
  • 50% of English teaching time is devoted to PLP-R/W
  • provides a print-rich environment (English Room and classroom) enhances student learning
  • works in a parent-child-teacher perspective - a detailed briefing for parents will be held in early September 2010.

From reading to writing QEF article

The English team has successfully got granted the Quality Education Fund (From Reading to Writing Program) one year project for P.4-6 students.
The performance indicators are:

1. Pupils are able to comprehend most reading passages and produce
better composition.
2. Pupils show interest in the class and have satisfactory
participation in the online learning.
3. The online reading/writing platform is in place.
4. Students with different learning progress are given appropriate
level of lessons for learning.
5. Teachers are able to make use of interactive materials to assist
their teaching.

In this project, we will shortlist passages that are interesting and level suitable to students. There will be ten reading passages per level (totally 3 levels). We will do the voice-over so that students can listen to the recording while reading. It can increase overall language proficiency, particularly listening comprehension, as well as the ability to acquire a greater sense of the rhythm of the language, which in turn can help learners read and listen in meaningful sense instead of breaking sentences into small parts. Sight words and vocabularies as well as the sentence structure will be introduced.
